UPM Tilhill to help restore 18th century park landscape
UPM Tilhill’s South-East England district has been awarded a soft landscaping contract, worth in excess of £500,000 by Crispin & Borst to carry out works at Priory Park, Reigate.
The works form part of a one year, multi-million pound Heritage Lottery Funded project to restore the historic landscape of Priory Park, Reigate to its 18th century heyday.
UPM Tilhill will begin work on site immediately. The first challenge is the translocation of eleven mature lime trees using an Optimal 3000, 3m tree spade mounted on Mercedes ten wheeled truck chassis. It weighs 38t unloaded and is one of just two tree spades of this size in Europe. The trees, planted in the 1970s, currently line a path due to be re-routed through the park. With an average girth in excess of 1m, they have been selected for their quality and importance to the park and will be replanted in copse formation to retain the maturity of the landscape within this environmentally sensitive scheme.
“It is always a pleasure and a privilege to be involved in the restoration of an historic landscape,” said Peter Middleton, Commercial Director, UPM Tilhill. “Here at Priory Park we have a wonderful opportunity to help bring an 18th century landscape to life on a grand scale. The support the project has received from the Heritage Lottery Fund reinforces the significance of the Project and the benefits it will bring to local communities.”
The contract is scheduled for completion by the end of 2007.
