UK first for UPM Tilhill
UPM Tilhill has become the first UK company to achieve registration against National Highway Sector Scheme 18 (NHSS 18) for the Environment and Landscape including Ecology on highway schemes.
Once NHSS 18 has been formally adopted by the Highways Agency on 1st August 2008 any landscaping works being completed on new trunk road schemes must be completed by a company that conforms to the full requirements of the current scheme.
UPM Tilhill achieved registration against all seven categories of NHSS18: Arboriculture; Landscape construction; Landscape maintenance; Environmental management activities; Pesticide application; Amenity management activities and Ecological management activities.
“We are delighted with our success in being the first to achieve registration to the National Highway Sector Scheme for the Environment and Landscape – a process which reinforces our commitment to driving up standards across the industry,” said Phil Hymers, Commercial Manager, UPM Tilhill. “As a market leader, our success depends on delivering high-quality, transparent and robust operations through our highly trained workforce.”
NHSS 18 has been published by the Sector Scheme Advisory Committee for the Environment and Landscape (SSACEL) comprising expert representatives from across the sector from clients, contractors, suppliers, trade associations, training organisations and certification bodies. The Scheme covers all landscape, environmental and ecology processes undertaken within the sector from initial assessment for new works through to maintenance. This includes activities of assessment, design, planning and implementation, as well as asset management and long-term maintenance.
