Project: Mitigation of loss of Great Crested Newts habitat

UPM Tilhill staff worked with an ecologist to mitigate the loss of a Great Crested Newt habitat on a retail development by creating new ponds to receive the newts, and erect drift fencing to contain and then trap them.
Reptile exclusion fencing was erected around the development area, drift fencing was erected within the area to trap newts which were then translocated to the new habitat.
Work included:
- supply and installation of 4,300m of amphibian exclusions and drift fences.
- supply of 450 newt traps.
- creation of a newt receptor area, including two new pond habitats.
- vegetation management.
