Devil's Dyke

Project: Vegetation clearance on a scheduled monument for chalk grassland recreation
Client: Cambridgeshire County Council
Value: £28,000

Devil's Dyke is a scheduled ancient monument built by the Saxons. The work entailed clearance of scrubby vegetation, to allow chalk grassland to recolonise the previously grazed areas in selected sections between Newmarket and Reach in Cambridgeshire.

The terrain is very steep and the site is of major historical importance, which required the use of specialised machinery and low impact techniques. The work was carried out in four phases over three years.
